MERKEL CELL CARCINOMA OF THE EYEBROW EXTENDING IN THE ORBIT

C. Woldt, R. Krallmann, V. Seiberth

Merkel cell carcinoma is a cutaneous neoplasm that rarely occurs in the eyelid or the periorbital region. The tumor has an aggressive nature with high local recurrence and metastases rates.

Case report: We report a case of a large Merkel cell tumor extending from the eyebrow into the nasal orbit in a 84 year-old woman. Local resection resulted in microscopically complete removal of the tumor. During follow-up (4 months) no local recurrence or metastases were noticed.

Conclusion: Merkel cell tumor is a rare tumor of the elderly that often locally recurs and metastasizes early. Extension of Merkel cell tumor from the eyebrow into the orbit has very rarely been described.
